Waratah Aged Care is a modern 72-bed aged care home designed to provide a comfortable and engaging environment for older Australians. Located near Newcastle, the project enhances the existing village, expanding its capacity to deliver residential, dementia, and specialist care within a familiar, community-focused setting.
Delivered within a live environment alongside several existing dementia and specialist care homes, construction required careful coordination to minimise disruption to residents, staff, and visitors. Comprehensive planning and proactive communication ensured that safety, noise, and access were effectively managed throughout delivery, allowing daily operations and care services to continue seamlessly.
Innovation is at the heart of the facility’s design, featuring the Elsi Smart Floor system. Developed in Finland, the sensor-based flooring detects movement and assists staff in monitoring resident activity, improving safety and fall prevention. The building’s exterior notably showcases a contemporary aesthetic, clad in Fundermax panels with aluminium fins and complemented by aluminium sunshades and honed concrete blockwork for durability and visual interest.
The new two-storey building includes a basement and houses 72 single bedrooms with private ensuites. Each room is equipped with nurse call systems and smart floor technology. Shared amenities include 4 dining rooms with servery kitchens, a salon, therapy and activity rooms, 4 large lounges, and multiple sitting alcoves that encourage social interaction. Staff facilities include administration offices, treatment rooms, reception, and modern workspaces.
The outdoor spaces were designed to support connection and engagement, including a courtyard with a pergola, activity panels, a giant chessboard, and a separate secure courtyard with a men’s shed, landscaped gardens, and colourful winding paths. These vibrant communal spaces create opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and community activities.
Through a blend of technology and thoughtful design, Waratah sets a new standard for technology and design innovation in aged care environments in Australia.
