The refurbishment delivered a next‑generation Digital Teaching Studio designed to support a new era of hybrid learning. The space gives lecturers the tools to teach interactively and provides students, on campus or online with a studio‑quality experience. The refurbishment responds directly to the post‑COVID shift in higher education, where flexible, digital‑first participation is now an expectation.
Delivered within a live university environment, the project required careful sequencing, strict safety controls and close coordination with UNSW stakeholders. Demolition and fitout works were planned around teaching schedules, with noise, access and deliveries managed to maintain predictable operations. The integration of complex audiovisual systems demanded precise services coordination, acoustic control and specialised installation environments.
The Digital Teaching Studio incorporates advanced audiovisual engineering, including 12 automated cameras, intelligent microphone arrays and lighting fully integrated with the audiovisual system to optimise presentation quality. The system automatically selects the best camera angle and audio source, creating an immersive environment for remote learners. Finishes were chosen to enhance acoustics and clarity, including acoustic wall panels, specialised lighting, green‑screen flooring and a mix of timber and carpet surfaces. Flexible seating was installed to support a range of teaching modes.
The full project scope included full demolition of the existing fitout and construction of a new virtual teaching laboratory with audiovisual infrastructure, green‑screen zones, upgraded services, multiple power points, new windows and doors, storage, a teacher workstation and student seating areas. The completed Digital Teaching Studio positions UNSW at the forefront of digital‑first education, enabling high‑quality, accessible learning for students worldwide and setting a benchmark for future hybrid teaching spaces.
