The refreshed ground floor of the H22 Vallentine Annexe brings together teaching, research and specialist geoscience equipment in one integrated space designed to support the next generation of geotechnical and earthquake science professionals. The upgraded areas give students, researchers and academics modern laboratories, clearer workflows and purpose‑built zones for hands‑on testing and applied learning.
Delivered within a live University campus, the project required careful staging to keep the building safe and operational throughout construction. Noise, vibration and dust were closely managed, especially around sensitive equipment and occupied rooms. Close coordination with University stakeholders ensured service shutdowns, deliveries and high‑impact works were planned around teaching schedules, with clear communication helping staff and students move safely through the building.

Key design features included specialist geoscience and materials‑testing infrastructure such as a 5‑tonne gantry crane, corrosion and wet‑laboratory spaces and dedicated testing machine rooms. Mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems were upgraded to support laboratory‑grade ventilation, reliable services and safe handling of materials. New teaching, office and technician spaces were designed to improve accessibility, functionality and collaboration.
The project scope included demolition and refurbishment of the entire ground floor, construction of new laboratories, workshop areas, technician and office spaces, teaching rooms, storage areas, change rooms and amenities. External works delivered a new accessibility ramp and minor façade upgrades to create a compliant and welcoming entry.
The completed facility provides a robust, flexible and future‑ready environment that strengthens the University’s ability to deliver high‑quality geotechnical and earthquake science education and research.
