The refurbishment of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Student Hub, reception and external courtyard formed Stage 2 of the University’s broader Future Campus vision, delivering warm, contemporary and highly functional environments that enhance student experience, support staff, and strengthen campus connection. The project transforms a previously underutilised level into a vibrant hub for gathering, collaboration and student services, helping shape the future of UNSW.
Stage 2 was delivered during university holidays and under strict COVID‑19 protocols, requiring careful planning, controlled site access and a tightly sequenced programme to ensure completion ahead of the new academic year. Working within an existing building, the team managed UNSW’s operational procedures, coordinated deliveries through constrained access points, protected the lift interfaces, and resolved design details early to maintain momentum. Concrete scanning was undertaken to verify fixing locations for the automated shade sail, ensuring quality assurance without disrupting the existing structure.
Design enhancements focused on natural light, curved forms and a cohesive material palette that unifies the interior and exterior as a single precinct. The courtyard retained its existing water feature, with new timber decking on adjustable pedestals, recessed planters and a tensioned fabric canopy engineered for wind loads. Inside, curved joinery, planter‑integrated seating, commercial‑grade acoustic finishes and full‑height glazing create a calm, collaborative environment. Circular motifs in carpets, furniture and reception echo the courtyard’s geometry, reinforcing visual continuity and encouraging informal gathering.
