Level 6 of TAFE Burwood has been reimagined as a purpose‑built home for the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP), a national initiative funded by the Australian Government that provides free English education and childcare to eligible migrants and refugees.

Working within a live TAFE environment required careful planning to minimise disruption to staff and students. The strip‑out and construction works were sequenced to manage noise, coordinate service shutdowns and maintain safe access throughout the build. Close communication with campus operations ensured the refurbishment aligned with safety requirements and daily teaching activities.

The project involved the complete strip‑out and fitout of Level 6, including new partitions and the integration of electrical, mechanical and hydraulic services. The design focused on creating flexible, light‑filled learning spaces supported by modern amenities and clear circulation paths.

The new AMEP facility includes a reception area, meeting room, 8 classrooms, a staff room, student room and a purpose‑built crèche. Amenities included ambulant and bathrooms and a first aid treatment room, ensuring accessibility and safety for all users. These spaces were designed to support both structured learning and informal interaction, creating a welcoming environment for students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The completed refurbishment provides a contemporary, fully equipped learning hub that strengthens the delivery of the AMEP program. By combining education, childcare and community support in one cohesive space, the new facility enhances the experience of migrants and refugees as they build the skills and confidence needed to participate in Australian life.
