The reconfiguration of Gates 12 and 13 at Sydney Airport’s Domestic Terminal delivers a critical first step in Qantas’ wider expansion to accommodate new wide‑body aircrafts. The upgrade improves operational flexibility by enabling the gates to function as a Multi‑Aircraft Ramp System (MARS), serving either 2 Code C aircraft simultaneously or 1 larger Code D/E aircraft. This early stage unlocks capacity for future expansion and strengthens the efficiency of Qantas’ domestic network.
Working airside within an active terminal required disciplined planning, strict safety controls and constant coordination with airport operations. All works were sequenced around aircraft movements, security requirements and live passenger areas. The team managed tight construction windows, controlled access and ensured all activities complied with airside safety protocols.
A key design requirement was maintaining visual continuity with the surrounding terminal. External panels, glazing and cladding were custom‑sourced and colour‑matched to replicate the existing airport façade, ensuring the new gate blended seamlessly with adjacent structures while meeting current aviation and building standards. Apron line‑marking adjustments, aerobridge interface tolerances and gate equipment upgrades were delivered with millimetre accuracy to support the new aircraft configuration.
The scope covered internal and external gate works, aerobridge reconfiguration, apron modifications, new line markings, upgraded services and integration with existing terminal systems.
