Tripling capacity of the Haemodialysis Unit was driven by a simple but vital purpose: to improve access to life sustaining care for people living with chronic kidney disease in the Illawarra region. By increasing capacity at Shellharbour Hospital, the project reduced the need for long and frequent travel to Wollongong or Sydney Hospitals, making it easier for local patients receiving essential care.

The project not only included the development of the new unit but also the replacement of the hospital’s main electrical infrastructure. The works were managed to minimise disruption while ensuring uninterrupted support for existing medical services and equipment.

The new unit was designed in accordance with established New South Wales Health guidelines to provide a safe, efficient and consistent treatment environment. Energy efficiency was also a key consideration, with building services designed to reduce consumption and operating costs while supporting the intensive demands of dialysis treatment and future expansion.
