The façade remediation works at SCEGGS Darlinghurst were undertaken to ensure the ongoing safety, resilience and performance of two important campus buildings, the Joan Freeman Science and Technology Centre and the Diana Bowman Performing Arts Centre. As a school renowned for excellence and integrity, the project strengthened the built environment that supports students’ learning, creativity and wellbeing.

The works were delivered within a constrained inner‑city school environment, requiring careful planning, strict safety management and close coordination with SCEGGS to minimise disruption during school terms. Access to the buildings was complex, necessitating a combination of birdcage scaffolds, boom lifts and mobile scaffolds to safely reach all elevations. Inclement weather, restricted access windows and the need to maintain safe circulation for students and staff added further challenges. Latent conditions uncovered during demolition, including deteriorated plywood backing, missing flashings and inadequate framing required redesign and additional structural support. Road closures and landscape reinstatement were coordinated with Council to maintain public safety and protect the surrounding precinct.

The remediation works focused on removing and replacing approximately 1,000m² of combustible cladding, along with new sub‑framing, sarking and insulation to restore full compliance with the Building Code of Australia. Scope enhancements included replacing timber linings with fibre cement, repainting eave linings, upgrading rusted metal cappings, and reinstating services and fixtures. The existing height‑safety system was upgraded and recertified to facilitate safe future access. Heritage brickwork was carefully restored with large glazing added to improve natural light.

The completed works provide SCEGGS Darlinghurst with safer, more durable and compliant buildings that honour the school’s heritage while supporting its commitment to excellence, community and the development of confident young women. The project ensures these facilities remain secure, resilient and inspiring for generations to come.
