At Robert Menzies College, community comes first. The student accommodation complex embodies the college’s people-centred values of respect, integrity, and belonging, creating a welcoming home where students can live, learn, and grow together. More than just a place to stay, it’s a vibrant hub of connection and collaboration the Macquarie University campus.
Constructed within a live campus, the project required careful coordination to ensure safety, continuity of college life, and minimal disruption to students and staff. With a defined budget and tight site constraints, the team applied rigorous planning, cost control and sequencing strategies to deliver efficiently and safely in an active learning environment.
The new buildings façade references the robust materials and textures of the existing college, using face brick, off-form concrete and terracotta cladding, while introducing fresh forms that express Robert Menzies’ evolving identity. Two wings, connected by a glazed bridge, frame a new active courtyard that fosters connection and provides a vibrant frontage to Waterloo Road.
The project scope included 103 private ensuite rooms, shared lounges, seminar spaces and communal cooking areas. Sustainable design features such as passive solar principles, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient systems contribute to long-term environmental performance.
More than accommodation, the project reinforces Robert Menzies College’s mission to create a welcoming, supportive environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and personally. Built with Grindley’s commitment to planning thoroughly, building safely, communicating clearly, and handing over with confidence, the result is a place where people can continue living, learning, and thriving.
