The refurbishment of the Year 6 classrooms strengthened an important part of Pymble Ladies’ College Junior School, creating a modern, flexible environment that supports the College’s focus on exploration, participation and belonging. Designed to give girls a connected, open setting for collaboration and independent learning, the project aligns with the school’s vision for innovative learning environments in Years 5 and 6 and enhances the daily experience of students at a formative stage in their schooling.
Working within a live school environment required careful planning and disciplined control of risk. Early works were completed during term with strict separation from students and staff, while the most disruptive activities were delivered in the school holidays to continuity across the Junior School. Rising damp discovered during fitout added complexity, requiring immediate remediation and resequencing to protect the building fabric and maintain programme certainty.
The refurbishment introduced a new open layout across 2 levels, linked by an internal stairway through the existing post‑tensioned slab. Key features of the refurbishment included new aluminium sliders and bi‑fold doors which allow the space to be tailored around learning needs, structural steel needle beams, a new awning roof, upgraded information technology and lighting, and contemporary joinery and flooring to support flexible learning spaces.
The full project scope included demolition, structural modifications, concrete works, new windows and doors, electrical upgrades, internal finishes, remediation to address damp issues and fitout.
