The new three-storey café at the Powerhouse Museum enhances the visitor experience by providing a bright, modern space that complements the museum’s industrial character and its role as a cultural destination for locals and visitors. The café supports the broader Powerhouse Ultimo Renewal by offering a welcoming place for people to gather, rest and connect within one of Sydney’s most significant heritage institutions.

The project presented significant challenges including extensive core holing through existing suspended concrete for new drainage and services, all completed after hours and directly above the museum’s lace exhibition. Working within a heritage building added further complexity, with strict controls on vibration, noise and access. Close collaboration with museum staff ensured the works were carried out safely and without disruption to local business operations.

A standout feature of the café is its illuminated exterior, clad in Pixalux LED panels that create the appearance of a glowing cube when viewed from Harris Street. Installing these panels required precise detailing, patient coordination with the supplier and careful integration with the existing structure. Internally, the design balances an industrial feel with modern brightness, using durable finishes and clean lines to complement the museum setting.
