The fitout of PMDL’s new Sydney Studio at Walker Street, North Sydney transformed an existing commercial tenancy into a warm, collaborative and highly functional workplace. The relocation provided an opportunity to create a studio that reflects PMDL’s culture, design values and commitment to shared, flexible ways of working.
The project involved a coordinated interior transformation across the entire floor plate, integrating bespoke joinery, new spatial planning and refined material selections to support PMDL’s operational needs. Custom elements including the kitchen, reception, communal work bench and accounts nook were designed and constructed to anchor key zones, while new plasterboard and glazed partitions established a suite of purpose‑built spaces such as the boardroom, meeting room, quiet room and open plan workstations. These interventions worked together to deliver a cohesive, high‑performance studio environment rather than a series of isolated upgrades.
New communications and audio‑visual systems were integrated throughout to support sound, data and conferencing requirements, while updated lighting, new floor coverings and fresh paint completed the sophisticated interior overlooking North Sydney.
A key challenge involved working with existing base‑building services where as‑built documentation was inaccurate. The team undertook detailed investigations and collaborated closely with subcontractors and the Client to resolve service locations and ensure seamless integration with the new layout.
The open plan work area is centred around a maker space and supported by meeting hubs, breakout zones and contemplation nooks, reflecting PMDL’s decision to prioritise communal over personal space. Natural, warm materials create an understated backdrop that highlights the outlook and delivers a bright, relaxed and homely studio environment.
