The redevelopment of Penshurst Public School has created a contemporary learning environment that celebrates diversity and supports students to build positive relationships in an atmosphere of respect and inclusion. Home to students from more than 60 nationalities, the upgraded campus provides spaces that encourage curiosity, connection, and lifelong learning within a strong academic framework.
The project replaced the former 500-place school with a new three-storey campus that now accommodates over 1,000 students. The design balances modern educational requirements with a strong sense of place, delivering vibrant, technology-rich spaces that foster collaboration and creativity.
Construction took place during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring careful planning and close communication to maintain safety and progress. With students temporarily relocated to a nearby pop-up school, our team worked closely with School Infrastructure New South Wales to ensure they could open for Term 1, Day 1. Despite major design revisions during delivery, the project was completed five weeks ahead of contractual completion, enabling a smooth transition for students and teachers.
Architecturally, the gently curved façade of the main block forms a defining feature, complemented by rectilinear ground-floor elements that break down the building’s mass at street level. This complex geometry required custom façade panels, scaffold design, and sunshade integration across multiple levels. Precast concrete was used within the communal hall to deliver a robust structure with refined finishes.
Sustainability was embedded throughout, achieving an Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) certification through initiatives such as efficient ventilation systems, sustainable materials, energy-saving fixtures, and comprehensive waste management practices. These measures were validated post-construction to ensure long-term environmental performance.
The new school features 47 flexible learning spaces, a hall, library, administration and staff areas, a covered outdoor learning area (COLA), canteen, student amenities, landscaping, and a rooftop playground. Buildings were strategically positioned to frame a central courtyard that serves as the heart of the school, a safe, open space for assembly, recreation, and informal student activities.
