The façade remediation project at Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) strengthens the safety, resilience and long‑term performance of a leading medical research institute dedicated to improving the lives of people living with brain and nervous system disorders.
Located within the busy emergency access zone of Prince of Wales Hospital and outside a highly active research facility, the project required meticulous planning, disciplined staging and close collaboration with NeuRA stakeholders. Laboratories are highly sensitive to noise and vibration, and research operations could not be interrupted. Activities were sequenced around critical research schedules, and a custom cantilevered scaffold system was engineered to provide full access to the north elevation without obstructing hospital or research entrances.
The remediation works focused on replacing combustible aluminium composite panels with non‑combustible solid aluminium panels, complying with current fire safety regulations and standards. The new panels feature a durable PVDF coating that is fully recyclable, corrosion resistant and energy efficient, supporting long‑term sustainability. Defective sarking and insulation were replaced, and improved detailing was introduced to prevent future water ingress and enhance building performance.

The scope included full façade panel removal, installation of new solid aluminium cladding, replacement of sarking and insulation, engineered scaffold systems, and detailed interface works to maintain the integrity of the existing structure and services.
The completed project provides NeuRA with a safer, more durable and environmentally responsible façade, protecting vital research operations and supporting the institute’s mission to transform lives through medical discovery.
