The MUSE project at Macquarie University transformed the former library into a vibrant social learning hub that bridges the gap between the active Campus Hub and the quiet formal spaces of the new Learning and Research Centre. Developed as an interim use while long‑term redevelopment plans progressed, the project responded directly to student and staff feedback calling for more collaborative, technology‑enabled study environments.

Delivering the fitout across two-storeys required disciplined planning, clear communication and careful coordination. With 4 architectural firms designing 4 unique zones, the project demanded a highly structured management approach to align design intent, resolve competing priorities and maintain consistency across the building. The project team facilitated regular workshops, coordinated shared services requirements and ensured all works were sequenced safely within an active university precinct.

A defining feature of MUSE is its multi‑architect design strategy. Each firm delivered a different spatial experiment. Woods Bagot delivered a transformable space with movable walls, lighting tracks and recycled desktops repurposed as screens. Bennett and Trimble introduced colour‑coded zones and flexible furniture layouts. NBRS created collaborative rooms and open study areas with strong visual identity. BNMH designed the Student Connect Unit, integrating technology‑enabled consultation spaces, LED lighting and intuitive wayfinding. Together, these spaces form a diverse, experimental environment that encourages movement, collaboration and customisation.

The scope included full strip‑out and fitout, new study rooms, open collaboration areas, flexible furniture, digital infrastructure, amenities, joinery, lighting and flooring, along with the Student Connect Zone.

The completed MUSE environment has become a highly successful student destination, offering adaptable, technology‑rich spaces that enhance academic, social and cultural life on campus. The project also reflects our values of collaboration, communication and quality delivery, demonstrating how complex, multi‑stakeholder environments can be brought together into a cohesive, high‑performing space.
