The Midtown MacPark Community Centre and Village Green creates a new heart for Macquarie Park. The new space gives residents and visitors everyday places to gather, exercise, learn and connect. The project brings together a pool and gymnasium, flexible community rooms, a café and a landscaped Village Green with play areas for all ages. The aim is to offer a welcoming place where people can celebrate, join programs, enjoy the park or just spend time outdoors.
Building these facilities in the middle of a live, mixed‑use precinct required careful planning and close coordination. Our works sat between two active construction sites and directly beside an occupied residential building. We kept neighbours informed through clear staging, regular updates and agreed interface plans. Deep rock excavation and the lowered basement for the pool were managed with strict noise and dust controls, including reduced hammering, sealed ground surfaces and scheduled respite periods. Materials were moved using mobile cranes, all‑terrain forklifts and were coordinated around tight access and nearby tower crane operations. Digital modelling helped resolve narrow service pathways and additional changes to the pool that needed redesigning within the built structure.
The design made the build complex because the structure had to be carved into the sloping sandstone site. Instead of sitting on top of the ground, the building had to be formed within it, which meant careful excavation, stepped retaining walls and tight working zones. Embedding the pool and gymnasium at park level required precise levels, waterproofing and coordination with the surrounding landscape works. Above, the community rooms and café open to shaded verandas and play areas, all supported by curved off‑form concrete and detailed structural beams. The project uses recycled concrete, Australian‑sourced materials and energy‑efficient systems, supporting the precinct’s Green Star completion targets and long‑term carbon‑neutral goals.
The full project scope included the three‑storey community centre, pool and change rooms, gymnasium and café shells, lifts, mechanical and fire services, hard and soft landscaping, playground and all associated civil and structural and landscape works. Together, the Community Centre and Village Green deliver a lasting community asset, one that strengthens social connection, supports wellbeing and provides a vibrant, flexible public space for the growing Midtown community.
