The E4B Student Centre upgrade at Macquarie University was delivered to improve the experience of students and staff and support the University’s broader program of campus renewal. The project created a more functional and welcoming front‑of‑house environment while enhancing the efficiency of the administrative spaces behind it.
Working within a live university campus, especially the E‑Precinct, required careful planning around movement, logistics and safety due to the building being in a central location. Previous experience in this part of the campus informed the staging strategy, allowing demolition and construction activities to be coordinated with pedestrian flows, adjacent teaching spaces and ongoing University operations. Noise, dust and access were managed closely to minimise disruption.
The new front‑of‑house area features polished concrete floors, bespoke joinery and a fully glazed entrance that improves visibility and connection to the surrounding student environment. These elements were designed and constructed to provide durability, clarity of circulation and a contemporary aesthetic consistent with the University’s campus identity.
Behind the public interface, the project delivered a suite of functional workspaces including enclosed offices, open‑plan administration areas and a new staff breakout space. Works included demolition of the existing Student Centre and adjoining computer rooms, followed by the integration of new services, finishes and joinery throughout. The completed upgrade provides a more efficient and welcoming Student Centre that supports day‑to‑day operations and enhances the experience of students and staff.
