The highly bespoke modular build for Macquarie University delivered a temporary food, beverage and events precinct known as The Common, created to support students and staff during major campus redevelopment works outlined in the University’s long‑term master plan. Designed as a welcoming place for the campus community to gather, the project transformed 60 recycled shipping containers into a fully serviced hospitality and social hub at the heart of the University.

Construction took place in the centre of a live University campus environment and required careful staging, off‑site fabrication and precise installation sequencing. Working within a live environment demanded strict coordination of deliveries, crane movements and pedestrian safety. Our team worked closely with Architectus, Aspect Studios and ARUP to maintain construction efficiencies and meet a demanding program, delivering a high‑quality outcome within a tight timeframe.

A key feature of the project was creating an indoor–outdoor environment while maintaining weather protection. This was achieved through a prefabricated tensile fabric roofing system, with the containers forming the structural frame, combined with Dampalon‑clad doors, the system ensured the space remained watertight while providing flexibility, daylight control and a strong visual identity for the precinct.
