The resource recovery facility at Badgerys Creek is helping families and neighbourhoods in Penrith and Liverpool make a real difference to the environment. By turning household waste into compost and recycled materials, the facility supports a circular economy.

The new facility processes over 134,000 tonnes of household waste each year, diverting up to 78% of waste from landfill. This dramatically reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 75,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually, which is the equivalent of removing around 19,000 cars from Sydney’s roads. Green waste and food scraps are transformed into high-quality compost, supporting local parks, gardens, playing fields, and broader land rehabilitation, forestry, and agricultural projects. Metals, paper, plastics, and glass are also recovered and recycled, keeping valuable resources in circulation, rather than landfill.

The project was constructed on SITA’s existing 8-hectare site, with the new centre spanning 14,250m2 to house advanced waste processing equipment. The works consist of a positively pressured structure containing the waste sorting plant, internal concrete tunnel bays for waste composting, an attached control office, external hardstand, two external maturation pads for compost drying and a dam for collection of water for use in the composting process.
