The refurbishment of Court 8A in the John Maddison Tower was undertaken to support the Court’s growing criminal trial caseload and improve the experience of jurors, witnesses and the public. With many matters highly sensitive, the project focused on creating a calmer, more supportive environment.
Delivering works within an operational court building and sheriff’s office required strict adherence to established protocols, disciplined staging and clear communication. Well‑defined scopes, coordinated site access and strong collaboration between our team the Client and the design team ensured program dates were met and disruptions were minimised.
A timber‑based palette and tree‑themed motifs were introduced across public areas, complemented by durable acoustic wall coverings. The refurbished courtroom integrates contemporary audio-visual technology, multiple display screens, improved sightlines and upgraded acoustic treatments, creating a more functional and orderly environment consistent with the Department of Communities and Justice guidelines. Adjacent meeting and jury spaces were refreshed with clean, modern finishes and improved amenity.
The works included a new jury trial courtroom, jury deliberation room, large meeting room, accessible bathroom, waiting areas and office spaces. The upgraded Court 8A now offers a more supportive, accessible and efficient environment, strengthening long‑term community outcomes within the justice system.
