The Fitzgibbon Community Centre is a welcoming, multi-purpose facility designed to be the social and cultural heart of the emerging Fitzgibbon neighbourhood. Set within native bushland, the centre provides flexible spaces that support community events, cultural activities and everyday gatherings, while strengthening connections between residents and the areas local heritage.
Constructed on a challenging low-lying site previously used as redundant farmland, the project required careful site preparation and coordination. Close collaboration between the design and site teams was critical due to the building’s detail-driven architecture. Our team managed construction efficiently, delivering high-quality, award-winning outcomes while responding proactively to design challenges and site conditions.
The centre is defined by its bold use of naturally weathering steel, which wraps the exterior and forms sculptural blades referencing the site’s industrial past while creating a striking civic presence. A central portal frames views to the surrounding bushland, with the halls connected beneath a continuous steel roof that creates a sheltered terrace and gateway to nearby walking tracks. Internally, warm timber finishes and generous natural light reinforce a seamless connection to the landscape.

The full project scope included 5 community halls, office spaces, kitchens, amenities, terraces landscaping and an external maintenance shed, all designed to integrate seamlessly with the bushland. Low maintenance, accessibility and durability were key considerations throughout with the doors and halls being built 140cm+ wide for wheelchair, pram and other users.
Today, the Fitzgibbon Community Centre stands as an award-winning landmark, offering a safe, inclusive and enduring space that continues to foster community connection and engagement well into the future.
