A major upgrade within the Downing Centre was undertaken to enhance the functionality, safety and overall experience of one of Sydney’s most significant justice precincts. The project sought to modernise facilities while supporting the complex operational needs of judicial staff, legal practitioners and the public, all within a landmark heritage building that remains central to the delivery of justice in New South Wales.

Working in a fully operational courthouse presented considerable challenges, including strict security requirements, active court schedules and the need for continuous flexibility around ongoing operations. Noise, dust and odour management were critical, with robust hoardings and environmental controls installed and maintained throughout construction. Extensive communication protocols ensured all stakeholders remained informed, while careful staging allowed works to proceed safely alongside ongoing court activity. The coordination and delivery of Department of Communities and Justice information technology and audio visual systems added further complexity, requiring precise integration to meet contractual and operational requirements.
