The Czech Republic’s new Australian embassy was their country’s first overseas construction project in more than a decade. The development symbolises the Czech Republic’s presence in the region and the strength of diplomatic ties with Australia.

The original concept was won in a government-led design competition by Prague-based architect Markéta Cajthamlová. HS Architects in Sydney were then engaged to adapt and deliver the design locally, ensuring alignment with Australian building standards, construction methodologies, and material availability.

The vision centred on clean, minimal architecture expressed through a refined material palette. The lobby showcases 75mm-thick custom-made White American Oak clad doors, complemented by timber and brick finishes internally and externally. The façade incorporates four different 50mm-high brick types, blended in a carefully considered ratio to achieve a distinctive and contemporary aesthetic.

To deliver the hanging brick soffit, a bespoke suspension system was designed and installed, with all mechanical fixings fully concealed to create a seamless finish. The brickwork extends through the main entry and into the paving, reinforcing material continuity and architectural intent.
