The refurbishment of the heritage‑listed building at Bramble Bay Retirement Village was undertaken to transform a former nursing home into a vibrant community hub supporting both independent living residents and the adjacent aged‑care complex. The intent was to preserve the building’s historic character while creating a welcoming, functional space that enhances social connection, wellbeing, and daily life for the Masonic Care Queensland community.

Working within a live retirement and aged‑care environment required careful planning, sensitivity, and ongoing communication. Heritage constraints added further complexity, with strict requirements to retain original room layouts, ornate cornices, and key architectural elements. Construction activities were staged to maintain safe access, minimise disruption, and protect the building’s fabric. Heritage consultants were engaged throughout to ensure all interventions respected the building’s significance while enabling contemporary use.

The refurbishment celebrates the building’s history through thoughtful design additions. Steel beams were installed just below the cornice line to maintain the visual memory of the original room divisions while allowing the floor plan to open into generous, flexible community spaces. Modern finishes, accessible layouts, and upgraded services ensure long‑term functionality without compromising heritage character.
