The Blacktown Disability Sports Centre sets a national benchmark for inclusive sport and community participation. Located within the Blacktown International Sports Park, this purpose-built facility was designed to transform access to sport for people with disability across Sydney, creating a space that celebrates ability, connection, and wellbeing.

Delivered in partnership with Blacktown City Council and Disability Sports Australia and funded by the NSW Government’s Office of Sport, the centre forms part of a broader commitment to providing high-quality, accessible facilities that promote active lifestyles and social inclusion.

The building’s exterior features a series of oval forms that reference bouncing balls and kinetic energy, symbolising movement, potential, and uniqueness. These shapes, along with the façade design, draw inspiration from the surrounding Blacktown Sports Park facilities, ensuring the new structure integrates seamlessly with its environment. To achieve the intended look, 3 types of cladding were incorporated through a mixed-material use of metal, translucent, and fibre cement. Large windows were strategically placed to introduce natural light onto the courts without causing glare, supporting both function and comfort within the facility.

The project scope included the construction of a single-storey building comprising 2 full-sized multi-sport courts, entrance lobby and circulation areas, accessible amenities including changing facilities, automatic doors, quiet spaces to support sensory needs, storage areas, and a covered entry forecourt. Reconfiguration and refurbishment of the adjacent existing Athletics Stadium change rooms, accessible bathrooms and associated facilities, including concrete footpaths and ramps connecting the Disability Sports Centre to the Athletics Stadium and track. Extensive landscaping, roadworks, and car park extensions within the Blacktown International Sports Park were also delivered, alongside associated civil works and utility connections. The build was carefully coordinated within a live precinct, ensuring ongoing access for pedestrians and public users throughout construction.

This project represents more than just bricks and mortar. In 2032, Brisbane will host the Paralympic games, and this new centre will be a place that not only brings people together to celebrate ability but will create talent pathways and opportunities for future champions to train.

The centre was officially opened by council members, Disability Sports Australia employees and local sporting teams testing out the new facilities.

“The opening of the new Disability Sports Centre of Excellence is a landmark day in NSW disability sports, and this facility will play a key role in Australia’s success at the Paralympic Games and World Championships.”
