The new student study centre within the Australian National Maritime Museum was created to support the University of Tasmania and the Australian Maritime College in delivering high‑quality tertiary education in Sydney. Designed to enhance the learning experience for nursing, paramedic and maritime students, the centre provides flexible spaces for study and collaboration.

Construction took place within a fully operational museum environment, requiring careful planning to minimise disruption to visitors, staff and exhibitions. With restricted access and strict delivery windows limited to before 9:00am and after 5:00pm, the project team coordinated all movements with museum operations to maintain safety and to protect the surrounding public areas. Working within an active cultural institution also required sensitive handling of noise, materials and equipment to ensure the museum could continue operating without interruption.

The design focused on creating a warm, adaptable and contemporary learning environment. Modular furniture allows students to reconfigure spaces for group work, presentations or individual study, while innovative storage and joinery solutions maximise functionality within the existing building. Extensive use of timber brings warmth to the interiors, and vibrant soft furnishings add colour and energy to the collaborative zones. A mix of open and enclosed spaces supports a variety of learning styles and activities.
