Grindley wins Greengate Development tender for St. Peter's Green, a Catholic Health Care and Willoughby City Council project
Greengate Development has awarded Grindley the $26.4 million Design and Construct head contract agreement for St. Peter's Green in Lane Cove North, north of Sydney. St. Peter's Green is an aged care and independent living facility with a unique slice of café culture- a community library and café. This is the first community library to be integrated with an aged care facility.
Work commences this month (July) with completion due in November 2009. It will consist of a 93 bed age care facility, 27 independent living units and a reasonably large community library, to be operated by Willoughby City Council, linking directly to the café.
Situated in the leafy suburb of Lane Cove North on a site 7,200m2 parkland site that has been vacant for many years, the design retains all the mature trees in the south west corner of the site, where the café will overlook wonderful landscaping.
The RACF building incorporates low and high care facilities, with the library on the ground floor. Direct access from library to café make this an ideal familiar meeting spot for all locals. The independent living units run along the northern boundary with views over West Chatswood Golf course from top level units and landscaping between units and the RACF. Basement car parking and lifts promise easy access and a pleasantly uncluttered street-scape.
The main ESD initiative on the development will be a gas powered solar hot water system that will cover the roof on the north east side of the development.
The Grindley Construction team is delighted to be working with Greengate Development to deliver this exceptional facility for Catholic Health Care and Willoughby City Council.

Advanced Waste Treatment facility by Grindley will cut waste and boost recycling
Planning Minister Frank Sartor has approved a $40 million waste management facility for Western Sydney which will help
reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the equivalent of taking 20,000 cars a year off the roads. Grindley Construction has
been appointed by SITA Environmental Solutions to Design and Construct the Advanced Waste Treatment facility. The
plant will be located on an 84-hectare landfill site at Kemps Creek and will feature the latest waste reduction and recycling
technology. The anticipated completion date is August 2009.
The new facility will process up to 134,000 tonnes of waste a year, only 40 per cent of which will end up as landfill. The remainder will be recycled into useful materials including:
- Wood, paper, plastic and metal recyclables;
- Compost; and
- Fill to rehabilitate the existing landfill site.
The proposed facility will meet the NSW Government's Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy whilst reducing greenhouse gas production by more than 90,000 tonnes a year. It is designed to reduce off-site odours to an acceptable level for existing and future surrounding land use.
In addition to meeting all the required environmental guidelines, the Minister has imposed 50 additional conditions to protect local amenities and deal with potential future development around the site, including:
- Limiting hours of operation for waste delivery to 6am-6pm from Monday to Friday, with more restricted hours on weekends;
- Setting strict noise limits and requiring the proponent to install noise mitigation measures at one nearby residence;
- Requiring regular monitoring of noise and odours;
- Protecting the area between the site's western boundary internal road and Badgery's Creek as a riparian corridor;
- Limiting approval to a period of 20 years from the commencement of operations.
The existing landfill is regulated by a development consent granted by Penrith City Council in 1990 and an environmental protection license granted by the Department of Environment and Climate Change.
Meinhardt Australia has been appointed as principal consulting engineers; Smith & Tracey have been appointed as architect; Shelmerdine Consulting Engineer is the mechanical consultant; Brentwood Engineering is providing the process equipment; Bassett Consulting have been appointed as the Fire Consultants and Blackett Maguire Goldsmith has been appointed as the BCA consultant.
